Packaging distribution is two businesses sharing one warehouse. The stock side—corrugated, tape, stretch film, poly mailers—is a volume game won on price and availability. The custom side—die-cut boxes, printed film, foam inserts, customer-specific kits—is a specification game won on detail: board grade and flute, ECT rating, mil thickness, resin type, print plates, and the dieline revision the customer approved last spring, not the one from 2021.
Margin lives in places most systems don't look. A custom job quoted on material cost alone gets eaten alive by freight when the cube says the order ships as air. Specs that live in the wrong place
The box spec is in an email. The dieline is on a shared drive, revision unclear. The customer's packing instructions are with a rep who is on vacation. Every custom quote and reorder starts with an archaeology dig.
Custom jobs quoted before the freight math
Packaging is bulky and light—freight is priced on cube as much as weight. A job quoted on material and converting cost, with freight estimated later, is a job whose margin is a guess. Cube economics belong inside the quote, not after it.
Vendor bids compared in someone's inbox
A custom job goes to two or three converters. Quotes come back in different formats—per thousand, per MSF, with plate charges buried differently. Comparing them honestly takes a spreadsheet nobody else can read, and the losing bids vanish instead of becoming pricing history.
Reorders that quietly drift from the spec
Twelve reorders in, someone substitutes 32 ECT for 44, or the customer's own product changed and nobody updated the packaging spec. The mismatch shows up as damage claims or a line down at the customer's plant—long after the paper trail went cold.
Plate, die, and tooling charges handled inconsistently
One-time charges are invoiced, absorbed, or forgotten depending on who ran the quote. Repeat business on a printed item becomes an argument about who owns the plates and whether they were ever paid for.

The customer approved the sample verbally, or in a text, or maybe they approved the second sample not the third. When the production run arrives and it's "not what we approved," there is no approval trail to stand on.

Integration notes for packaging operations
- ERP and order management stay authoritative for inventory, invoicing, and customer accounts. Specs, bids, and approvals live in the operational layer and flow into orders at release.
- Carrier and freight rate data feeds cube-based estimates at quote time—parcel, LTL, or truckload—using your actual rate agreements rather than generic published tariffs.
- File storage for dielines, artwork, and plates is indexed against the spec record, so the current revision is one click from the quote instead of a folder hunt.

- How many claims last year traced back to a spec or revision mismatch rather than a manufacturing defect?
- If a key account asked for their full item list with specs and order history, how long would assembling it take?
Questions packaging distributors ask
- Yes, and it should—most packaging distributors run both. Stock items flow through a fast reorder path, while custom items carry specs, bids, and approvals. The quote workbench treats them as two modes of the same queue rather than two disconnected tools.
- Files are versioned and attached to the spec record, with the approved revision marked explicitly. Quotes, purchase orders to converters, and customer approvals all reference the same revision, which is what ends the 'wrong dieline' category of dispute.
- The estimate does not need to be perfect to be useful—it needs to be consistent and in the right range. Cube is calculated from item dimensions and quantity, then rated against your carrier agreements. Quotes stop carrying unknown freight risk, and actuals reconcile against estimates so the model improves.
- The change becomes a new revision: old spec archived, new spec approved, open orders flagged for review. Reorders always pull the current approved revision, and the system can require a fresh approval when a revision changes mid-relationship.
